Huskie Happenings - Weekly Superintendent Newsletter

September 8-12

Each week, Mr. Slavik shares a quick recap of what’s happening across Breckenridge Community Schools and a look ahead at upcoming events. Huskie Happenings is your go-to source for staying connected with school news, celebrations, and important reminders. Whether you're a student, parent, staff member, or community supporter, this newsletter keeps everyone in the loop as we grow and learn together. Stay informed. Stay engaged. Stay Huskie Strong!

Some of you may know that I celebrated a birthday milestone this week. Both personally and professionally, it gave me a chance to reflect on my time here at Breckenridge. I am truly excited about the growth we’ve experienced as a district over the past few years.

We’ve seen academic growth, stronger family engagement, and improved communication. We’ve enhanced our facilities and continued to build an excellent educational environment that supports student success—no matter their interests or goals.

Just as I continue to grow older, our district will continue to grow as well. We are always setting new goals for improvement and striving to better ourselves for the sake of our students.

One goal. One team. Every student thrives.

Wade Slavik, BCS Superintendent

Huskie P.R.I.D.E. in Action!

During the first few weeks of the school year, our advisory teachers guided students through what it means to live out our Huskie P.R.I.D.E. expectations in every space on campus, hallways, classrooms, cafeteria, and beyond.

P = Participation – Be engaged and involved

R = Respect – Treat others, spaces, and yourself with care

I = Integrity – Do the right thing, even when no one is watching

D = Determination – Stay focused and never give up

E = Excellence – Strive to be your best, every day

By learning and practicing these expectations together, our Huskies are creating a positive and supportive environment where everyone can thrive.

Let’s keep showing our Huskie P.R.I.D.E. everywhere we go!

Here is a link to a detailed look at our Huskie P.R.I.D.E. Matrix that was created with student and staff input.

September is Suicide Prevention Month, and our students are leading the way in spreading hope and positivity throughout the building.

NHS students placed Huskies with every student’s name on their lockers to create a warm and welcoming environment.

Student Leadership Team is preparing positive sticky note messages for lockers.

Clubs, sports teams, and organizations have added encouraging signs to lockers.

Bulletin boards are filled with uplifting reminders.

Yellow 988 flags and signs are displayed outside as a visible reminder of support and resources.

We want every student to know: you are not alone. Help is always available through the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline at 988 or Michigan’s OK2SAY program, where you can confidentially report concerns to keep yourself and others safe.

Our students have been busy growing plants in our hydroponics Flex Farms! 🌱 This hands-on project gives them a chance to learn, grow, and soon enjoy the results of their hard work. Nothing beats the experience of planting, caring for, and tasting something you’ve grown yourself!

Personnel/Leadership

Breckenridge Community Schools will support, recruit, and retain highly qualified personnel to collaborate and meet the needs of our students.

This week our chapter had the distinguished honor of performing the FFA Opening Ceremonies during a memorial luncheon for a former advisor. Mr. Valliere served as the Breckenridge FFA Advisor from 1967–1974. We are truly grateful to have been invited to take part in such a meaningful and honorable event. I am very proud of our students for representing Breckenridge FFA and carrying on a tradition that truly sets our organization apart.

Operations

Breckenridge Community Schools will strategically utilize resources to provide an optimal environment for staff, students, and community.

In Breckenridge, our Transportation Department goes above and beyond every day! 🚍 We are fortunate to have 7 very dedicated drivers who take great pride in transporting our most precious cargo — our students.

Each day, our team safely transports over 350 students across nearly 156 square miles (not including extra trips!). The safety and well-being of every student we serve is our greatest strength, and we are grateful for the commitment and care our transportation staff show each and every day. Thank you! 6
