Huskie Happenings - Weekly Superintendent Newsletter

September 1-5

Each week, Mr. Slavik shares a quick recap of whatโ€™s happening across Breckenridge Community Schools and a look ahead at upcoming events. Huskie Happenings is your go-to source for staying connected with school news, celebrations, and important reminders. Whether you're a student, parent, staff member, or community supporter, this newsletter keeps everyone in the loop as we grow and learn together. Stay informed. Stay engaged. Stay Huskie Strong!

Dear Parents and Staff,

As we continue to live out our vision of โ€œOne Team, One Goal, Every Student Thrives,โ€ this week we are focusing on the importance of belonging and involvement.

When students feel connected to their school, they are more engaged, motivated, and successful. Encouraging involvement in extracurricular activities, clubs, and service opportunities not only helps students build friendships and teamwork but also fosters growth beyond the classroom.

Belonging and involvement are essential in shaping well-rounded learners and citizens. By exploring new opportunities and connecting with others, our students develop the skills and character needed to be lifelong learners and active members of their community.

Every child deserves to feel like they are an important part of the Huskie family. Thank you for the role you play in supporting our students and our shared mission.

Sincerely,

Wade Slavik
Superintendent

September is Suicide Prevention Month, and our students are leading the way in spreading hope and positivity throughout the building.

NHS students placed Huskies with every studentโ€™s name on their lockers to create a warm and welcoming environment.

Student Leadership Team is preparing positive sticky note messages for lockers.

Clubs, sports teams, and organizations have added encouraging signs to lockers.

Bulletin boards are filled with uplifting reminders.

Yellow 988 flags and signs are displayed outside as a visible reminder of support and resources.

We want every student to know: you are not alone. Help is always available through the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline at 988 or Michiganโ€™s OK2SAY program, where you can confidentially report concerns to keep yourself and others safe.

POWERSCHOOL

๐Ÿ“šโœจ As we get into our school routines, one important step each fall is setting a starting point for measuring each studentโ€™s academic growth. Over the first few weeks of September, students will take their NWEA MAP Growth assessments.

These tests arenโ€™t about grades, theyโ€™re designed to show us what your child already knows and what theyโ€™re ready to learn next. This helps

. teachers tailor instruction to meet the unique needs of each student.

๐Ÿ’ก A few helpful things to know:

  • MAP Growth adjusts to each studentโ€™s responses, giving a personalized snapshot of learning.

  • The results provide teachers with data they can use right away in the classroom.

  • Parents will get reports to better understand where their child is starting the year and how they grow over time.

Our buildings will pass along this information over the next few months and will be able to share your childโ€™s path to academic growth and discuss results further at Parent-Teacher Conferences later this fall.

We appreciate your support in making sure students come rested and ready to do their best. Thank you for being an important part of this process and for partnering with us to help every Huskie grow! ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’›

Our seventh graders kicked off the school year by tackling a big question: Why should we study history? After thoughtful discussions and debates, each class created a human bar graph to see which reasons rose to the top. The winning ideas will serve as our โ€œwhyโ€ all year long as we dive into the past to better understand the present and shape the future!

Personnel/Leadership

Breckenridge Community Schools will support, recruit, and retain highly qualified personnel to collaborate and meet the needs of our students.

๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’› On Wednesday afternoon, our staff gathered for their monthly meetings. These meetings are a valuable time for collaboration, planning, and working toward our district goals for the year.

๐Ÿ“š At the elementary level, the focus is on coaching teachers to strengthen literacy instruction and aligning our HMH literacy curriculum.

๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿซ At the secondary level, the focus is on co-teaching and inclusion, ensuring students who need additional support can thrive in our general education setting.

It is set-aside time like this that allows our team to work together and grow together, regardless of the topic.

We are committed to growing, improving, and working together to better serve our students and community. ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’›

One team, one goal, every student thrives. ๐Ÿพ

Operations

Breckenridge Community Schools will strategically utilize resources to provide an optimal environment for staff, students, and community.
