Huskie Happenings - Weekly Superintendent Newsletter |
|
|
|
|
Dear Staff and Families,
As we head into our Spring Break, I want to take a moment to wish everyone in our school community a wonderful, safe, and relaxing week off.
Whether your plans involve a change of scenery or the comfort of staying home, I hope you find the time to truly unplug and rest. After a productive start to the year, this break is a well-deserved opportunity to recharge your batteries.
If you are traveling, please stay safe on the roads or in the air. We look forward to seeing everyone return refreshed and ready for the home stretch.
The arrival of spring brings warmer weather and longer days, but it also signals the start of our busiest season. From extracurricular events and end-of-year celebrations to the final rounds of testing, the coming weeks will be full. Taking this time now to rest up will ensure we all have the energy to finish the school year strong.
Enjoy the sunshine and the much-needed downtime.
Warmly,
Wade Slavik, BCS Superintendent

📖🐷A 'Farm-tastic' Reading Month at Breckenridge Community Schools 🚜🎉
|
What an incredible Reading Month we’ve had! As we wrap up our activities, we want to extend a huge thank you to everyone who made this month so special.
Our "Down on the Farm" theme was a resounding hit! From the creative classroom decorations to the farm-themed literacy challenges, the energy across the district was palpable. It was wonderful to see our students so engaged and excited about every activity.
None of this would have been possible without the hard work of our dedicated staff and the wonderful support from our families. Together, we did more than just read; we sparked new interests and nurtured a genuine love for reading that we hope stays with our students all year long.
It was truly a memorable month for the Huskies! Check out a few highlights from our final week below.

📚 BES Drops Everything and Reads! |
On Tuesday, the hallways of BES turned into a giant library! For 15 minutes, our entire school participated in a school-wide reading time.
Whether they were leaning against lockers or sitting with friends, every student and staff member found a great book and dove in together. It was a quiet, powerful moment of community and a great reminder that there’s always time to get lost in a story.
Way to go, Huskies! 🐾

We are thrilled to announce that Breckenridge Community Schools has been awarded a $10,000 grant from the Gratiot County Community Foundation!
This incredible funding—made possible by the Clyde and Maude Mizer Memorial Fund—will be used to launch an exciting new initiative: introducing our 5th-grade students to the world of band! 🥁🎷
A massive thank you goes out to our Band Director, Dana Molands, for his dedication and hard work in securing this support for our students. We are so grateful for this investment in our fine arts program and can’t wait to hear the music grow in our community!

BES Wall of Wonderful Work |
It’s the little things that leave the biggest impact. 🧡💙💚
Our BES staff are dedicated to building up our students every single day. Before spring break, they filled the halls with encouragement, writing a personal note for every student's locker.
This simple act reminds us all that positive reinforcement and knowing you are cared for makes a world of difference. We missed our BES family over the break and are so excited to welcome everyone back to a school where you are always appreciated!

🐾 AI Literacy & Innovation at Breckenridge |
Breckenridge Community Schools is excited to announce our formal partnership with the GIRESD AI Task Force. This collaboration provides our staff and students with a structured framework to navigate the evolving world of Artificial Intelligence with integrity and purpose.
The AI Use Scale
To ensure consistency across our classrooms, we are adopting a standardized AI Use Scale. This tool allows teachers to clearly define the "rules of engagement" for any given assignment—ranging from entirely human-generated work to collaborative "co-piloting" with AI. By using a common language, we are helping our Huskies move beyond simple "yes or no" AI rules and toward true responsible AI literacy.
New Resource: AI Exemplar Library
To support this rollout, we are also introducing the AI Exemplar Library. This internal resource serves as a "look-book" for staff, featuring:
Real-world examples of assignments mapped to different AI levels.
Best practices for AI disclosure and citation.
Innovative prompts and projects that successfully integrate AI as a teaching partner.
By leaning on the expertise of the GIRESD Task Force and our own collective brilliance, we are ensuring that Breckenridge remains at the forefront of educational innovation while protecting the value of student voice and original thought.

🎶 OUR BAND HITS A HIGH NOTE! 🎶 |
The faces of an EXCELLENT band! 🏆
This weekend, this crew made history as our current HS Band’s first-ever appearance at the MSBOA Band Festival. They faced tough judges and a "blind" sight-reading test, coming away with:
✅ A 1 in Sight-Reading ✅ An Overall 2 for the festival
To bring home these ratings in a debut year is a massive accomplishment. They played with heart, stayed focused under pressure, and represented our school beautifully. Bravo, band! 👏🎶

German History & Hands-On Fun! |
Our German Links exchange students are loving their time in Germany! 🌍 They explored powerful Cold War history at a former border tower and then learned to cook traditional dishes like authentic pros. 🥨🔪
Memories, history, and great food—what an incredible experience!

🌿 Greenhouse Fresh! Mark Your Calendar for May 7th 🌿 |
Our students have been busy in the greenhouse planting and nurturing a beautiful variety of flowers that will soon be ready to brighten up your home gardens! While they are still growing strong under the glass right now, these student-raised plants will be perfectly bloomed and ready for their new homes starting May 7th. We are so proud of the hard work and "green thumbs" our students have shown this season. Make sure to mark your calendars for the big sale on May 7th so you can pick out the best of the bunch and support our hardworking growers!
|
Our Middle School STEM students just wrapped up a project combining Michigan history with circuit engineering. They researched local lighthouses and applied their knowledge of electricity to build these functional, glowing replicas.
From wiring the "lanterns" to the final paint job, these future engineers really nailed the details! 🛠️✨

🚜 Ag in the Classroom: FFA Takes on Breckenridge Elementary!
|
This week, our FFA members traded the farm and the shop for the classroom! In a wonderful partnership with the Michigan Farm Bureau, our students visited Breckenridge Elementary to bring a little bit of agriculture to the local youth.
Highlights of the Visit:
Blueberry Education: Students learned all about the journey of blueberries from the field to the table.
The Blue & Gold Experience: Elementary students got a "hands-on" feel for the FFA by trying on the legendary blue corduroy jackets.
Reading & Connection: Our members spent time reading to the classes, sharing stories that highlight the importance of farming in our daily lives.
Seeing our students step up as mentors and leaders is what FFA is all about. We are so proud of the way they represented our chapter and inspired some future farmers!

Plaid shirts, mustaches, and flapjacks... oh my! 🥞🪓 |
As part of our Michigan History curriculum, students traded their modern gear for plaid shirts and suspenders to learn what life was like in a traditional logging camp. We explored the "Map Details" of the cookshack, bunkhouse, and cutting grounds—getting a real taste of the hard work that helped build our great state.
The best part of the day? Taking a break at the "Cookshack" for some delicious flapjacks! 🥞☕️
It was a morning full of history, heritage, and a whole lot of syrup. We are so proud of our hardworking "lumberjacks" and their enthusiasm for learning!

The Engagement Ladder: Leveling Up, One Step at a Time 🪜 |
We know student engagement is rarely an "on/off" switch. We can’t expect a student who is currently "Disrupting" or "Withdrawing" to instantly shift to "Driving" their own learning in a single lesson. 💡
This week, Mr. Slavik had the opportunity to listen to Tommy Thompson discuss Visible Learning and his presentation was a crucial reminder of this reality.
The key isn't a quantum leap; it’s about strategic "leveling up" along the Continuum of Engagement. Success means helping a student move:
From "Disrupting" ➡️ to "Avoiding" (Still disengaged, but less harmful).
From "Withdrawing" ➡️ to "Participating" (The major shift from passive to compliant action).
From "Participating" ➡️ to "Investing" (Finding value in the work).
Our job is to provide the scaffolding that helps students take that next manageable step forward. Progress is the goal.

Operations
Breckenridge Community Schools will strategically utilize resources to provide an optimal environment for staff, students, and community.

📣 Attention BES Parents - Important PM Pickup Info! |
We need your help to keep traffic flowing smoothly at dismissal. Due to spring sports starting up, we have increased activity at the ball fields.
Please allow for through traffic from the BES parking lot to the ball fields.
To assist with this, our maintenance team has painted fresh white lines. Please use these lines as a guide and do not block the lane. It’s essential to leave this space open for coaches, athletes, and families who need to travel to the fields for practices and games.
Thank you for your cooperation in helping to keep everyone safe and on time! ⚾️🏃♀️🚗
