Dear Parents and Staff,

The beginning of the school year is an important time to build strong, healthy routines that set our students up for success. Routines provide children with structure, consistency, and a sense of security, which are critical elements for both learning and growth.

At School:
Teachers are intentionally spending the first weeks of school reteaching, modeling, and practicing classroom expectations. Establishing clear procedures, such as how to transition between activities, participate in discussions, or ask for help, which helps students know what is expected of them. Research from The Journal of Positive Behavior Interventions shows that classrooms with well-established routines experience fewer disruptions, stronger student engagement, and higher academic achievement. By front-loading time on expectations, teachers build a foundation that supports both learning and positive behavior throughout the year.

At Home:
Parents play an equally important role in setting strong routines outside the classroom. Helpful strategies include:

  • Setting consistent bedtimes

  • Limiting phone use or disabling apps during sleep hours

  • Checking in daily about what happened at school

  • Supporting homework completion in a distraction-free space

  • Being intentional about making school a family priority

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, children and teens who get adequate sleep show improved attention, behavior, learning, memory, and emotional regulation. Likewise, the Harvard Graduate School of Education highlights that when families create predictable routines, students benefit academically and socially.

Working Together:
When teachers and parents establish strong routines in their respective roles, students are more confident, focused, and ready to learn. Clear communication between home and school about how each child is adapting ensures we can provide the right support at the right time. Together, we form the essential link in creating well-rounded, successful students.

Thank you for partnering with us to make this school year the best it can be!

📚✨ As we get into our school routines, one important step each fall is setting a starting point for measuring each student’s academic growth. Over the first few weeks of September, students will take their NWEA MAP Growth assessments.

These tests aren’t about grades, they’re designed to show us what your child already knows and what they’re ready to learn next. This helps

. teachers tailor instruction to meet the unique needs of each student.

💡 A few helpful things to know:

  • MAP Growth adjusts to each student’s responses, giving a personalized snapshot of learning.

  • The results provide teachers with data they can use right away in the classroom.

  • Parents will get reports to better understand where their child is starting the year and how they grow over time.

Our buildings will pass along this information over the next few months and will be able to share your child’s path to academic growth and discuss results further at Parent-Teacher Conferences later this fall.

We appreciate your support in making sure students come rested and ready to do their best. Thank you for being an important part of this process and for partnering with us to help every Huskie grow! 💙💛

Linewize

💻✨ At Breckenridge Community Schools, student safety comes first—online and in the classroom.

We are excited to share that we use Linewize, an internet safety system that:
✅ Filters student devices for safe browsing
✅ Gives teachers and parents visibility into student online activity
✅ Allows parents to sign up for access to help support safe, responsible internet use at home

Together, we can ensure our Huskies are learning and exploring safely online. 💙💛

Personnel/Leadership

Breckenridge Community Schools will support, recruit, and retain highly qualified personnel to collaborate and meet the needs of our students.

📚 Embracing Co-Teaching at BMS/HS

At Breckenridge Middle/High School, we’re excited to implement co-teaching, where general education and special education teachers work together in the same classroom. This approach ensures all students access our core curriculum while receiving the supports they need to succeed.

Research shows that co-teaching improves academic outcomes and student engagement. To support this, our staff have been—and will continue to be—provided professional development to strengthen these best-practice strategies and create meaningful learning experiences for every student.

📖 Literacy at Breckenridge Elementary

At Breckenridge Elementary, literacy is the foundation for lifelong success. We’re not only providing a top-notch literacy curriculum but also coaching our teachers to reach their fullest potential. With support from GIRESD and literacy expert Kelli Mitchell, our staff are continually improving their instructional practices. We’re excited to grow and learn alongside our students!
